As well as providing development know-how
for client products Polymed is also involved in the development
of products in which it owns an interest. It may in certain
circumstances agree to take an interest in a client product
in return for providing development services or to discuss
a mixture of fee-for-service and royalty. This type of
arrangement would only be considered if Polymed had specialist
skills in the particular product area and felt that there
was a good chance of commercial success
Currently Polymed is developing products in three areas
:
Wound Meter™
This patented device is being developed
to sample and assay fluid from chronic wounds such as
venous ulcers or pressure sores and, by use of proprietary
software algorithms, predict the likelihood of healing
under the current method of management. This allows nurses
and health care professionals to monitor the progress
of a wound on a daily, or less frequent, basis and to
make the necessary changes to the treatment regimen if
it appears that the condition of the wound does not favour
healing
Pain Report™
This software based system allows
hospital patients to use bedside computer portals to alert
nursing and medical staff to the location and severity
of pain as frequently as necessary. This allows early
intervention and enables the accurate monitoring of analgesic
regimes. It has been established that provision of effective
and flexible analgesia enables earlier mobilisation, decreased
post-operative morbidity and can lead to earlier discharge
from hospital and associated cost savings. It also provides
a useful method of data capture for research
Scar-X™
This early stage project is examining
the potential of molecules already licensed for systemic
cardiovascular indications to be used topically for the
reduction of scarring after surgery, burns or traumatic
wounds. If effective it could provide opportunities for
new patents for molecules for which a great deal of regulatory
information is already available
